We have been together since April 18th, 2007. The ring is platinum with a round single diamond.
Juju, I was actually advised against a full carat in one of the jewellers, as it would look too big and ostentatious, when I described the size of her teeny-tiny fingers. The thing still looks huge on her hand. We need to get it sized, but I suspect she will also pick a slightly different one.
It is very nice and sparkly, I must say. I was worried it would be nice enough, but having checked them out on others for the last six months when possible, I think it qualifies.
As for how she is accepting it? Well, we are moving in together. I delayed the moving in thing until I had asked her. In Italy, and now more so in Ireland, it is common for couples to live together for a long time without getting married. I do not like that idea. I would move in with her if it was in the back of my mind that I might move out. I only want to move in with her if it is clear that it is to be permanent.

Congratulations man. So many guys in my life getting engaged/married these days.
1 carat is too big. Somewhere around 1/3 carat looks the best in my opinion. I commend your choice of cut and metal.
Isn't it also common for engagements to last for over a year? I'm not a big fan of engagements that last that long. But then the marriage process is different back home.
Yeah, engagements tend to last over a year. I am not really 100% sure though. This is all a grey area for me. Yes, we do spell grey that way.
It is even more grey for her though! I kept frightening her by pointing out the effort involved in a wedding, and the permanence of it all.
Glad you like the choice. My logic was that it has not gone out of fashion before, but also that I like simple things that look nice.
No worries. I use gray and grey interchangeably (Firefox is objecting to grey though).
The effort involved in a wedding or a marriage? The word "permanence" in the sentence gives me the impression you mean the marriage. I don't think planning a wedding is all that bad. In fact, I've been itching to get involved in planning one. Have your people call my people.
i bileev a congratulations is due..
Congratulations!
